Running back Ty Montgomery bails on Dolphins meeting to sign with Jets

So much for that. It was reported this morning on NFL Network that the Miami Dolphins would be hosting free agent running back Ty Montgomery tomorrow for a visit. That will not come to fruition, as Montgomery has agreed to a deal with the New York Jets.

While it may come as a disappointment to some, it is hard to envision Montgomery being a fit for these Dolphins. After all, Brian Flores preaches a team first mentality.

Think back to Montgomery’s final days as a Green Bay Packer in October.  Montgomery fumbled a kickoff late in the game against the eventual NFC Champion Los Angeles Rams. The fumble handed the ball back to the Rams offense and effectively lost the game for the Packers. An innocent mistake, until it is revealed that former Packers head coach Mike McCarthy ordered Montgomery to take a knee but Montgomery chose to run the ball out anyway.

When Montgomery was pulled from the game on the following possession, he reportedly became irritated on the sideline — that according to his own teammates after the game.

So while losing out on a free agent signing to the New York Jets may not be fun, Dolphins fans can take comfort in knowing it probably wasn’t the player Miami really wanted anyway.
