Running back market doesn’t bode well for Steelers RB James Conner

Just two years ago, all we heard was about how running backs were going to re-set the market and finally get the money they deserve. Multi-talented players would be paid for everything they did on the field and the NFL would finally respect what the running back position had to offer.

It took just two years for the bottom to fall out of all that. We’ve already seen Todd Gurley get released and the New York Jets seem to have buyers remorse over taking on former Pittsburgh Steelers running back Le’Veon Bell.

This is important to the Steelers because James Conner is entering the final year of his rookie contract. There’s been no talk on an extension and I highly doubt there will be. Conner’s inability to stay healthy negates much of his negotiating power and despite his talent, he cannot feel confident watching talents like Gurley and Devonta Freeman looking for work.

Pittsburgh has multiple players on the roster who can play running back but no one who inspires confidence to create balance to the offense. But whether it’s Benny Snell Jr. or Jaylen Samuels, there’s enough talent to make Conner wonder if he’s going to get another contract.
