Rundown area on edge of city centre to be transformed by £8m scheme

Plans have been unveiled to build 66 affordable new homes on a brownfield site on the edge of Liverpool city centre.

Tony McGann , chair of the Eldonians Housing Association, unveiled the scheme on Friday.

An exciting fly through video released to the ECHO reveals a thriving new community on Love Lane in Vauxhall.

The rundown area, known for its series of railway arches, is within walking distance of the city centre.

The Eldonians Housing Association now hopes to build 66 high quality one and two bedroom apartments on Love Lane with funding from Homes England to pay for the scheme, said to be worth in the region of around £8m.

It is hoped that the scheme will be sympathetic to Liverpool City Council's ten streets scheme to regenerate the waterfront area to the north of the city.

A spokesman for the Eldonians told the ECHO : "The aspiration is to deliver a mix of 66 high quality one- and two-bedroom apartments, live-work spaces and designated parking on the site, bringing city living style at  affordable costs.

The innovative, sustainable design for the apartments , will bring together a great mix of new and old, with modern spaces located next to existing Victorian  railway structures, connecting old and new commercial activity and celebrating the heritage of the docklands area.

The Eldonians will be working with their community and key partners, the Prima Group and architects Halsall Lloyd Partnership to develop the plans for this modern, sustainable , community led, green, development proposals."

Tony McGann,  who helped found the now famous Eldonian community housing scheme in the 1970s. said:  “This is an exciting scheme that’s been in the pipeline for some time and we can’t wait to take it a step closer to becoming a reality.

"We’re confident the proposed development will not only meet the housing needs of the local community but also offer opportunities to attract new people to the area.”

George Evans, Chief Executive of the Eldonians,  said: “The aim to turn a redundant piece of land into innovative and attractive homes for up to 168 new residents will see the Eldonians take their community-led approach to housing forward for future generations.

"We can see how this could be a great addition to the area, and we are pleased to be working towards delivering much needed new affordable housing.”

The Eldonians hope to submit formal plans for Love Lane to the council early next year.
