A runaway train in Australia travelled for nearly 100km without a driver before it derailed.

The huge iron ore 268 wagon train was travelling from Newman to Portland, in Western Australia, and managed to travel for a massive 92km (57 miles).

Incredibly, the train started to drift away and travel on its own after the driver briefly got out to check on a wagon at about 4.40am, the Australian Transport Safety Bureau said.

The train was brought to a halt by BHP personnel at 5.05am, but was already miles away.

In a statement, the Australian Transport Safety Bureau said: “The driver alighted from the locomotive to inspect an issue with an ore car. While the driver was outside of the locomotive, the train commenced to runaway.

“With no one on board, the train travelled for 92 km before being deliberately derailed at a set of points operated by the control centre, about 119 km from Port Hedland (near Turner).”

It was also reported by local news there was no one injured and authorities are investigating.
