Runaway sheep bring M4 to standstill

A group of runaway sheep have returned home safely after escaping on the M4 .

The adventurous animals found themselves on the motorway between J15 and J16 earlier this morning (July 14).

Traffic was temporarily held while Highways England officers attempted to escort the sheep off the carriageway.

They were eventually returned home with the help of a local farmer and his dog.

A spokesperson for Highways England said on Twitter: "A busy day for us here in the South West! First a dog, then sheep on the M4.

"They were quickly located by our barrrmy traffic officers and taken to safety by the local farmer and his dog.

"The sheep were issued safety advice and barrrred from the motorway."

They added: "Fences are checked by our highway inspectors and this is a rare incident in the south west.

"Sadly it does happen and on this occasion no one was put in any danger."
