Runaway M1 driver flees crash scene and leaves two female passengers seriously injured

Two women had to be taken to hospital with serious injuries after a car crashed on the M1 near Leeds last night, September 7.

The silver Vauxhall Corsa overturned after coming off the southbound carriageway at J46 at around 11pm.

Four people were believed to be in the car, but when officers arrived only two female passengers were found. The duo were taken to hospital with serious injuries, although they are not believed to be life-threatening.

The driver of the car as well as another man are understood to have fled the scene. Police are now appealing for them to come forward.

A spokesperson for West Yorkshire Police said: "Officers were called to the southbound carriage at junction 46 at around 11pm last night where a silver Vauxhall Corsa had left the carriageway and overturned.

"Police would also like to speak to anyone who witnessed the collision or may have dash-cam footage of it."

Information can be given to the Roads Policing Unit via 101 or by the live chat facility quoting log 1915.

The road was closed until 8.20am and congestion remains in the area.
