Runaway car smashes into cemetery while dragging elderly man along the road

An elderly man was dragged along by his own car as it rolled backwards down a busy road and through a cemetery wall.

The man, said to be in his 70s, had parked his blue Mercedes on Gaer Park Drive in Newport on Tuesday at around 4pm but as he got out of the vehicle it began to move.

It is not known if the handbrake had been properly applied.

Eyewitnesses have reported seeing the man then trying to grab the steering wheel only to lose his balance and and get hit on the head by the open driver's side door.

He was then dragged along as the car began to pick up speed.

The vehicle then rolled backwards across Bassaleg Road, missing passing traffic, before smashed through the stone perimeter wall of St Woolos Cemetery.

An ambulance was called for the driver, who was later taken to the Royal Gwent Hospital while his Mercedes - the rear end of which was completely smashed in - had to be removed by a recovery lorry.

A spokesperson for Gwent Police said: "We received a report of a road traffic collision in Bassaleg Road, Newport, at around 4.05pm on Tuesday 14 January.

"The incident involved one car, a blue Mercedes, which collided with the wall of the St Woolos Cemetery and the Welsh Ambulance Service attended the scene.
