Fans of El-P and Killer Mike of Run the Jewels have launched a Kickstarter campaign to get Meow the Jewels, a cat-sound remix of their forthcoming album, officially released.
News of this potential rework comes ahead of the duo’s second album, Run the Jewels 2, which is out on 27 October on Mass Appeal Records. Alongside digital, CD and vinyl versions, the album is available in collectors’ packages that include test presses, master acetates and a weekend with the duo. Most notable is the option to contribute $40,000 towards Meow the Jewels. “Run the Jewels will rerecord RTJ2 using nothing but cat sounds for music,” reads an online post.
Despite the jovial nature of the promise, the prospect of a cat-based album has proved too alluring for fans, who have launched a Kickstarter campaign to enable the masses to hear this feline remix. Although the official pre-order page’s disclaimer reads: “Run the Jewels reserves the right to take your money and not fulfill any of its obligations as outlined in any package priced at 35k or more,” El-P has now endorsed the campaign, claiming that if it is successful, the album could go ahead. At the time of writing, the Kickstarter has raised $2,536 (£1,560) and has 40 days left to reach its target of $45,100 (£27,680). According to the page, a large portion of the proceeds will be donated to victims of police brutality and a smaller portion to neglected animals.
RTJ2 finds space for guests ranging from Zack de la Rocha to Travis Barker. It follows 2013’s self-titled debut, which came out as a free digital download.
