Long stretches of clear path alongside the canal and river give runners a great opportunity to work on speed, with either intervals (fast bursts of running, with periods of recovery) or threshold/tempo running (running just outside your comfort zone for longer periods). 0k Starting outside Up And Running, head south along Deansgate. Turn right up Liverpool Road, past the Museum of Science and Industry, then right again to head north towards Bridge Street. If you need to check your route, you can use your Xperia Z3 smartphone even when it’s pouring with rain*.
1k Between 1k and 2k, you’ll cross the Irwell. Pause on the bridge to snap a picture with your Xperia Z3. Its 20.7MP camera with ISO 12,800 sensitivity means you can capture print-quality images, even in low light.
2k Back over the bridge at Blackfriars Street, another photo opportunity awaits you at Manchester Cathedral.

5k Between 5k and 6k, cross Woden’s Bridge to head down the river for a speedy out-and-back.
7k Just past 7k, turn back and admire the view of Old Trafford football ground over the river.
9k A little way past 9k, cross the bridge on to Quay Street and head back to your start point.
