Run-in, rivals and key players - Nottingham Forest's promotion challenge assessed

Eleven games to go. Nerves are being frayed. Nails are being bitten. But there is also excitement as Nottingham Forest look to mount one final push for promotion.

It has been more than two decades since the Reds dined at the top-flight table, but Sabri Lamouchi has got fans daring to dream.

Is this the year? Can they do it?

We take a look at the battle for the Premier League.

The run-in

Forest’s final 11 fixtures are made up of six home games and five on the road, with five matches against teams currently in the top 10.

It is against sides towards the bottom end of the table where they have especially struggled this term - that defeat to Charlton Athletic being a prime example. So the next few weeks, in particular, could be crucial.

Before the international break next month, Lamouchi’s men have got to face relegation-threatened Middlesbrough and Huddersfield Town - with a trip to the former on Monday night, while the Terriers visit the City Ground on March 18th.

Finding a way to break down teams like that, who tend to sit back more, could be key to the Reds putting a positive run together.

The campaign rounds off with a trip to Barnsley and a home game against Stoke City - two more sides fighting at the wrong end of the table. Forest will hope by then a top six finish is secured.

Form on their travels has been impressive under Lamouchi, as is their record against those close to them in the table - both of which could come into play in the remaining weeks.

Forest’s final 11 games:

Middlesbrough (A) - Monday, March 2

Millwall (H) - Friday, March 6

Sheffield Wednesday (A) - Saturday, March 14

Huddersfield (H) - Wednesday, March 18

Bristol City (H) - Sunday, March 22

Derby County (A) - Saturday, April 4

Fulham (H) - Friday, April 10

Preston North End (A) - Monday, April 13

Swansea City (H) - Saturday, April 18

Barnsley (A) - Saturday, April 25

Stoke City (H) - Saturday, May 2

The rivals

West Bromwich Albion and Leeds United are the front-runners at the moment. Is that the top two sorted?

The former seem very much on course for the title, with a four-point gap over the Whites and a nine-point one over third-placed Fulham.

If Leeds have a bit of a dip, there is a chance they could be caught, with Forest six points below them.

Brentford and Preston make up the current top six, and the latter are three points ahead of seventh-placed Bristol City.

But Blackburn Rovers, Swansea City, Millwall and Cardiff may all feel they are all still in with a chance of breaking into the play-off spots, if they can put a run together and others slip up.

The difference between Fulham (third) and Cardiff (11th) is 10 points, so the table remains pretty tight.

If the Reds are unable to break into the automatic spots, then putting as much distance between themselves and the chasing pack is the next best thing. They don’t want to be in danger of dropping out of the top six.

The key players

Lamouchi’s first-choice XI almost picks itself at the moment, when everyone is fully fit.

There are some in the squad struggling with knocks, but the likes of Sammy Ameobi and Lewis Grabban have shown their commitment to the cause by playing through the pain barrier.

Getting Samba Sow back will be a big boost. There’s no denying he has a great record when wearing the Garibaldi and he’s been a machine in the middle of the park.

But given his injury problems, the club will be in no mood to take any risks.

Sow makes a huge difference, for sure, but Forest still have a strong spine to their team without him.

The back five of goalkeeper Brice Samba, Matty Cash, Tobias Figueiredo, Joe Worrall and Yuri Ribeiro have been outstanding. Arguably one of the best defences in the division.

With Ben Watson ahead of them, Forest have become tough to beat.

Going the other way, while the Reds are still struggling for goals somewhat, they do have plenty of attacking quality.

Lewis Grabban is the spearhead and massively important, whether he’s in goalscoring form or not.

Lamouchi has a fair few options when it comes to players to support him, but Ameobi, Tiago Silva and Joe Lolley have proved a good combination of late.

The odds

Forest have a decent chance of securing promotion, according to the bookies.

The Baggies are understandably favourites to make it to the Premier League at 1/25 with SkyBet.

Leeds are 1/12, Brentford are 11/8, Fulham are 2/1 and the Reds are 9/2, with Preston 15/2.

The verdict

A top six finish looks a real possibility. Just need to avoid any complacency.

If the Reds can sort out their form against sides in the lower half of the table - particularly at the City Ground - they will be well on track.

Catching the top two is a big ask, but never say never...
