Rumoured Spurs target Jean-Philippe Mateta explains why Crystal Palace missed out on transfer

Spurs continue to be linked with a move for Mainz striker Jean-Philippe Mateta in the transfer window, as the striker explains that he stayed in Germany because he was not tempted by any of the interested clubs in the summer - including Crystal Palace.

Palace were one of the clubs chasing the 23-year-old over the summer, with reports stating that bids were made for the France Under-21 international worth around €15.5million (£14million).

However, the striker stayed with the Bundesliga club for the start of the 2020/21 season and has been in fine form so far, scoring 10 goals in 10 games in all competitions.

That form has led to an increase in speculation around his future, with Spurs among the teams linked with a potential January move.

Mateta was asked why he stayed with Mainz, and stated that he could not envisage a move to any of the clubs he was linked with.

"It's very simple," Mateta told Kicker when asked why he stayed at Mainz in the summer.

"I didn't see myself in any of the clubs that wanted me.

"I said to myself; 'the best thing to do is stay in Mainz, play a good season and then see what happens next summer'."

Palace brought in Eberechi Eze from QPR in a deal worth up to £20million in the summer, and also secured the signing of Michy Batshuayi on a loan deal from Chelsea.
