Rules Scots must be aware of before buying fireworks for Bonfire Night

Like most events in 2020, Bonfire Night is going to be a little bit different to what we’re generally used to.

Councils up and down Scotland have made the tough decision to cancel huge displays on November 5 due to coronavirus pandemic.

This means that displays will be more DIY this year, with Scots expected to hit specialist shops and supermarkets to put on their own spectacles.

But before you dip your hand into your wallet or purse for this year’s pyrotechnics, there’s a number of laws and rules you should be aware of.

Fireworks can only be set off between the hours of 7am and 11pm - but the curfew is extended for special occasions such as Bonfire Night, when it is extended an extra hour to midnight.

The curfew is also extended to 1am for New Years Eve, Chinese New Year and Diwali Night.

Adults are not allowed to possess category four fireworks - which are used for professional displays - unless you are a fireworks professional.

It is an offence for anyone under the age of 18 to possess all adult fireworks except those in category one - which includes party poppers, sparklers, throwdowns.

However, under 18s are banned from buying any fireworks.

Fireworks must not be modified, tampered with or misused.

Fires must not be lit within 30 metres of a road which causes damage to the tarmac or endangers drivers in any way.

It is also an offence to light a fire in a public place that endangers any other person or gives reasonable cause for alarm or annoyance or so as to endanger any property.

Fireworks must not be thrown or cast into any highway, street, thoroughfare or public space.

Anyone found to be in breach of the rules faces a “substantial fine” or even time in prison, with a maximum jail sentence of six months.
