Rules on tipping your Royal Mail postie at Christmas during coronavirus pandemic

In the run up to Christmas, slipping a note in the hands of your postie or paper boy is just one way to spread festive cheer.

But this year's seasonal celebrations are set to look very different due to the coronavirus pandemic, meaning people will have to think twice about their usual traditions.

Staff at Royal Mail are working incredibly hard to deliver everyone's cards and presents across the country in time for Christmas - and this doesn't go unnoticed.

Some may want to give a tip to thank their local postman, but it's difficult to know the appropriate protocol due to restrictions and social distancing.

Royal Mail confirmed the tradition of the 'Christmas box' - which sees people give cash or small gifts to those who perform personal services - is still allowed, but it's a "matter between customers and individual post people".

A spokesperson told SurreyLive: "Royal Mail does a hugely important job at Christmas when our people work really hard to deliver cards and presents across the UK in all weathers.

"Royal Mail regards the giving of Christmas tips as a matter between customers and individual post people so long as nothing is expected in return."
