Rules on face coverings for England, Scotland and Wales after restrictions lift

Boris Johnson has officially confirmed that all Covid-19 restrictions will be lifted on July 19.

Rules on face masks, social distancing and limits on social numbers are all set to change the Prime Minister has announced.

However, ministers are encouraging people to still wear face coverings in crowded areas such as buses or trains although not in venues like nightclubs.

Health Secretary Sajid Javid said masks and coverings are still “expected and recommended” in crowded indoor areas.

This comes after the plans to no longer make face masks mandatory received huge backlash from people including those in the transport sector.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan said: “Face coverings must be worn on London's transport network despite restrictions easing on 19 July.

“I am not prepared to put Tube, bus and other transport users at risk by relaxing the rules on face coverings.”

Unlike the Mayor of London, Andy Burnham said Manchester cannot require people to wear masks on buses and trains.

Greater Manchester Mayor, Andy Burnham, has also said he would not “rule out” making face coverings mandatory on public transport.

Meanwhile the The Liverpool Metro Mayor said he is 'hitting brick walls' when it comes to enforcing face masks on transport in Merseyside due to private companies owning them.

Dr Nabarro, a special envoy on COVID-19 to the World Health Organisation (WHO), told Sky: “As well as using vaccines as part of our defence, we’re going to have to continue by keeping a bit of a distance from each other.

“Then I’m going to suggest that the physical distancing part of one-metre-plus and mask wearing will be necessary, particularly in places where there’s lots of virus.”

Government guidance “will advise that wearing a face covering will reduce your risk and the risk to others, where you come into contact with people you don’t normally meet in enclosed and crowded spaces”.

Meanwhile, in Scotland it is very likely face coverings will remain in place even when social distancing measures end on August 9.

The Welsh government have also stated that face coverings will be required by law in some settings while Covid remains a threat.

Masks will still be mandatory on transport and in health and social care.

The Welsh government's next Covid review is set to take place today.

On Sunday, Vaccines Minister Nadhim Zahawi said new guidance will be published this week advising Brits to keep coverings on in crowded, indoor spots.
