Rules and guidelines on tenants being allowed pets in rented properties

Bristol Live, Somerset Live and Gloucestershire Live published an article on February 1, 2021, headlined: 'Landlords can no longer ban tenants from having pets in rented accommodation under new laws'.

The article reported that new rules meant that landlords could no longer issue blanket bans on tenants having pets in their properties.

This is incorrect.

In fact, the Ministry of Housing introduced a new standard tenancy agreement template, an optional contract that landlords may use if they wish. This template gives guidance on pets.

No rules or laws were introduced to stop landlords from not allowing their tenants to have pets.

We are happy to clarify this and apologise for the error.
