Rulebreaking student group banned from living on Dublin college campus over Covid breach scandal

A group of DCU students have been banned from living on campus after breaching COVID-19 rules.

A number of penalties were imposed on the students for breaking public health guidelines.

One student, in particular, was fined and banned from living on campus for two years for interfering with a fire extinguisher while breaking public health guidelines.

The rest were issued penalties and prohibited from living on campus for the rest of the academic year.

A DCU spokesperson said: "A number of fines have been imposed by Campus Residences with a small number of students banned from staying on campus for the rest of the academic year.

"One student has been brought before the University's Student Disciplinary Committee for breach of COVID-19 regulations and interfering with fire safety equipment. That student was fined and banned from living on campus for two years."

The news comes as last night saw a major spike in new COVID-19 infections at 520 cases were reported.

Medical Virologist and Director of the National Virus Reference Laboratory, Dr. Cillian de Gascun, warned that the highly transmissible UK variant, also known as B117, is now responsible for 90% of all cases in Ireland.

He said: "Public health advice aims to limit the opportunities this virus has to spread, and it should be noted that B117 does not need much opportunity to do so.

"The most effective way to stop the spread of this variant and all variants of COVID-19 is to limit your social contacts and follow public health advice.”
