Jan. 12--Name: Merrell women's Fluorecein Mid Waterproof shoe
What it is: Women's waterproof multipurpose shoe with built-in technology that makes it great for hiking trails or exploring a city in any kind of weather. Merrell's M-Select Dry technology keeps feet dry. The leather and fabric exterior have a waterproof coating to shed rain and puddles, while a mesh-lined tongue and ankle collar resist sweat. M Select fresh technology keeps moisture from making the shoes smell like a wet dog or worse. Durable outsoles offer slip resistance on varied terrains including dirt, pavement and gravel. And deep lugs in the sole resist dirt and debris. The shoe's midsole provides flexibility for greater agility. Its cushioned heel offers stability and comfort. Colors include chocolate brown, plum red, black and brown sugar. The men's equivalent shoe is the Fraxion Mid Waterproof, which also retails for $140.
The Good: Merrell Moab was my preferred hiking shoe from the moment I discovered them years ago at REI. But Fluorecein is lighter and prettier, and its weatherproof and comfort technology allowed me to scoff at foul weather and challenging terrains on several recent trips. Like Moab, Fluorecein shoes are comfy and work well with my orthotics because the insole is removable. On summer and fall trips, my feet stayed dry and comfy in rainy southeast Alaska and in steaming hot Death Valley. The shoes also kept my feet warm on chilly evenings in the Quebec wilderness. Plus, since they cover my ankles, I get some built-in protection from bug bites.
The Bad: Sometimes I have to double knot the long laces because they come untied.
Cost: $140
