They will play England, who brought their Pool D campaign to a close on Saturday, only just making it a perfect four wins from four as they snatched a late triumph over Samoa.
Australia are out as a result of their head-to-head record against Fiji.
New Zealand made it three big wins in a row as they swept Uruguay aside, and France will join them in the quarter-finals as Pool A winners after thrashing Italy.
Scotland needed to beat Ireland in what was the ultimate test for Gregor Townsend’s side, but it was the Irish who eased to a dominant win in Paris to set up a last-eight clash with New Zealand.
