Rugby World Cup 7am headlines as Wales receive huge injuries boost and Australia ramp up the pressure

It is Day 7 of the Rugby World Cup in Japan as Italy play Canada in Thursday's early kick off before England take on USA in what is expected to be a one sided affair.

Meanwhile there has been a Wales press conference this morning in the build up to Sunday's crunch match between Wales and Australia .

There is also some Ireland team news while the Wallabies have revealed their number one target in the Wales team.

Parkes and Owens take part in training

Wales forwards coach Robin McBryde says they can beat Australia as he revealed that despite injury concerns Hadleigh Parkes and Ken Owens have taken part in training.

Speaking to the press today, he revealed that “all the boys took part in training” on Thursday morning.

He confirmed: “Hadleigh and Ken took a part in training. Ken took a full part.

It's a good competitiveness, especially among the back row. It's very healthy for us.

“Ross Moriarty trained very well this morning, as did James Davies and a handful of others.

“Everyone realises what's at stake and it gives training that extra edge.

“Motivation is not an issue. Everyone realises the magnitude of this game.”

Wales target the breakdown

Robin McBryde says Wales have outlined the importance of winning the breakdown on Sunday.

Outlining the danger Australia pose, the forwards coach said: “They’ve got a very competitive 6 and 7, their hooker is also a threat and they’re big men.

"If we’re slow to get to the breakdown, they’re very hard to move.

“We have to make sure there is no separation between the ball carriers and first arrivals.

“We know we need to step up in other areas too.

“But the threats that Australia pose are far greater.”

Alun Wyn is Wallabies number one target

Australia are planning to target Wales captain Alun Wyn Jones when the two sides meet in Tokyo on Sunday. That’s according to Wallabies lock Rory Arnold.

“Obviously he’s accomplished a lot in his career,” he said.

“He’s their go-to at lineout time and he drives their set piece.

“And he’s a big figure in their team. We’ll have to be right on top of our game and shut him down.”

Good luck with that lads.

Australia won’t miss Israel Folau

Meanwhile George North says Australia won’t miss Israel Folau given the strength of their backline.

He said: “They have got threats by way of physicality, speed and aerial threats as well. The form the Wallabies are bringing in is impressive. We know we have to go up a gear to face them.

“Expect the unexpected because they have so many good players and trick plays. We have to be on. They’re a tough beast to beat. They’ve got skills from [player number] one to 15.”

Word Rugby’s decision questioned

Concerns have been raised over the ban on Australia star Reece Hodge by some of the game’s leading names.

Winger Hodge will miss Sunday’s World Cup Pool D clash with Wales after being banned for three weeks for foul play.

World Cup winning coach Sir Clive Woodward called the decision “totally wrong” adding that it will have “huge implications for the tournament”.

He said: “For me this is a yellow card and no more.”

Australian star Kurtley Beale says Wales 'bring the best out in him'

Beale has inflicted a fair bit of pain on Wales over the years.

Beale won a Rugby World Cup bronze medal at Wales’ expense in 2011 in Auckland, and the next year he scored all of the points against Wales, including the matchwinning try with 26 seconds left for Australia to triumph 14-12.

He helped the Wallabies beat Wales at Twickenham in a 2015 World Cup pool game, and scored his third try against Wales in a more comfortable win in 2017.

He said: “They bring out the best of you. The battles are always epic, you always look forward to playing Wales,”

He added: “We are well aware of (Dan Biggar’s expected aerial assault),” he says. “It’s a matter of making sure we are prepped, getting through a lot of reps at training.

“In saying that, Wales have got a really good backline to run the ball, Jonathan Davies, (Leigh) Halfpenny, (Liam) Williams, he’s class. A lot of threats.”

Mike Phillips picks his winning team for Sunday

The rugby legend has chosen the Wales team he believes could beat Australia by 10 points.

The Welsh legend says he was pleased with the way they started against Georgia and is “very upbeat about Wales’ chances against the Wallabies.

His team would include Owen Watkin over Hadleigh Parkes and Liam Williams at full-back.

Ireland announce team to face Japan

Jack Carty will make just his second Test start when Ireland face hosts Japan in Saturday's World Cup clash in Shizuoka.

The Connacht fly-half will pilot Ireland's backline with boss Joe Schmidt not willing to risk Johnny Sexton, who has nursed a minor thigh issue.

Joey Carbery is fit again after ankle ligament trouble and takes a seat on the bench.

Jack Conan was due to start in the back-row but picked up an injury in training on Thursday, meaning Peter O'Mahony was pressed back into service at flanker.

Munster star O'Mahony failed a Head Injury Assessment (HIA) in Saturday's win over Scotland, but quickly passed all the required checks and returned to full training on Tuesday.

Games on today

There are two games today.

Italy take on Canada at 8.45am before England play the USA at 11.45am in what should be a one sided affair - but an uncomfortable one with humidity set to hit around 78% at the Kobe Misaki Stadium.
