Welcome to the Evening Standard’s LIVE coverage of the Rugby World Cup in Japan.
Japan got proceedings under way against Russia on Friday, winning 30-10 in Tokyo following a stunning opening ceremony, Kotaro Matsushima scoring a hat-trick after a nervy start from the hosts.
New Zealand then fired an ominous warning of their grim focus to secure a record third-straight World Cup crown by grinding past South Africa 23-13 in Yokohama on Saturday.
Before that, Australia survived a scare to secure a bonus-point win over Fiji while France edged to victory over Argentina in a topsy-turvy match in Tokyo.
