Rugby wage cut talks continue between Rugby Players Ireland and IRFU

Talks between the IRFU and Rugby Players Ireland over possible player wage cuts will continue in the coming days.

It was hoped that a deal could be worked out today between the two parties after the RPI expressed anger over the IRFU 's claim that 20% wage cuts would be required from Ireland's professional players.

However discussions broke off once more without a resolution, but the two bodies will sit down again either later this week or early next week in an attempt to solve their differences.

“Rugby Players Ireland and the IRFU jointly confirm that discussions remain ongoing,” reads a joint statement.

“Both parties are still working towards a solution.”

The IRFU previously claimed that finances had 'fallen off a cliff' due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Recently RPI representatives were allowed to inspect the books to examine the Union's financial situation.

Early in the lockdown, the two parties did agree on wage deferrals on a sliding scale, with the highest earners such as Johnny Sexton and Andy Farrell taking a 50% deferral.

Non-playing IRFU staff are now on four day working weeks and have taken pay cuts.
