Rugby team suffer gruesome injuries playing on artificial pitch in stormy conditions

A Welsh rugby player has shared horrific images of his leg injuries after playing on a 4G pitch.

Brecon RFC scrum-half Scott Gibson was playing against Newbridge in Saturday's fixture at Merthyr RFC's Wern ground.

Newbridge claimed the top spot in the Division One East table by inflicting a first league loss of the season on Andy Powell's side with a 27-10 win.

But the result left more than a string for Brecon's players.

Former Cardiff RFC player Scott, 27, says five of his teammates have been left with similar injuries after playing on the artificial pitch.

"I played a lot on those 4Gs and I've had cuts and things like that the ones from Saturday, they are quite serious", he said.

"We were having hail, rain, the 4G was wet.

"Half time, I could see my knee, all the skin had come off both knees - I put Vaseline on, just get on with it.

"As soon as I went in the shower afterwards, I could feel the pain then."

Scott, who lives in Swansea, says he has been treating his injuries with antiseptic creams and is thankful he's not working this week.

"They are all pussing yellow, and you don't expect that playing rugby on a Saturday.

"Today they're yellow.

"I couldn't move my knees Sunday. As soon as they dried out, they were cracking.

"My knees were stuck to the bed, with all the puss and liquid.

"Luckily I'm off work this week because I work shifts at Cardiff Steel, but if I was working Sunday, for example, it would have been a struggle to do my work.

"I didn't expect to wake up Sunday with these burns on my knees - it's secondary, really."
