Rugby team forced to skip last season claims first premiership in 28 years

Coonabarabran has claimed its first rugby premiership in 28 years.

Last year they could not field a team but on Saturday the Coonabarabran Kookas won their first rugby premiership in almost 30 years.

Having made his debut for the side in 1995, captain Lonnie Stone has been with the team for close to the entirety of the championship drought.

"There's been a lot of build up to this — the last grand final victory was in 1992, so there's been a lot of pressure," he said.

"We've had the whole town behind us, the camaraderie has been phenomenal — everyone has been together as a big group, it's like a family."

To top off the day, the players were presented their jerseys by members of the 1992 championship team.

Ollie Wright scored a break away try in the second half to seal the 29-eight victory over Blayney.

"The opposition tried to do a kick-through and misjudged the kick," he said.

"Instincts kicked in and I just tried to run as fast as I could to the tryline."

Coach Stu Thomas said the team had performed consistently all year, which showed when it mattered most.

"It was just a really good team performance," he said.

Only 500 spectators could be on hand due to health restrictions.

Tickets sold out and the entire town turned blue and gold.

"For the town to come together through sport, brothers and sons, it's so great," Mr Thomas said.

The Kookas were one of seven clubs that signed up to contest the Oilsplus Cup in a modified 2020 season.
