Rugby rumours and transfer news: Leicester Tigers set to beat Exeter Chiefs, Bath Rugby and Northampton Saints to Welsh star; Harlequins line up sevens star

The rugby transfer market is in its busiest spell of the year as directors of rugby up and down the land are now allowed by league rules to speak to players at rival clubs.

Deals and departures are being announced all over the league and with Bristol Bears in their second season back at the top table of European rugby, playing in the Gallagher Premiership and European Challenge Cup, we take a look at all the latest transfer news and rumours from them and their rivals.

Here is all the latest.

Former England captain to leave Quins

Former England captain Chris Robshaw will leave Harlequins at the end of the season.

The 33-year-old is set to depart The Stoop at the end of the season after 16 years at the club which of course included the London sides’s 2011/12 Premiership winning side.

Flanker Robshaw has 66 England caps for England but last played for his country in June 2018.

Talking to Talksport, the forward said: "I could never have imagined I would be fortunate enough to play for the team I admired the most," he said.

"Though there is so much I will miss about playing for this team, I will always be eternally grateful and proud for having had the chance to stand alongside such extraordinary players.

"In terms of what I'm going to do next, I'm still not sure,

"I still don't know what the next chapter is, whether in a rugby capacity or a post-rugby capacity."

Leicester Tigers leading the chase for Wales star

Leicester Tigers are leading the race to secure the services of Welsh international star Ross Moriarty according to the latest reports.

The powerful ball carrying former Gloucester number eight is out of contract at his current side the Dragons at the end of the season.

The Rugby Paper report Tigers are favourites to sign the 25-year-old Wales international as they look to add some power to their pack, with Bath Rugby, Exeter Chiefs and Northampton Saints also reportedly taking a look at the big forward.

French Top 14 sides Lyon, Montpellier and Toulon are also said to be interested in the big forward while Pro14 sides Cardiff Blues and the Ospreys have also been linked with the 42-cap international

If Moriarty opts to not sign for one of the Welsh regions he would fall foul of Welsh rugby’s selection rule whereby exiled players need to have 60 or more caps to be eligible for Wales.

Harlequins 'mulling over' move for Argentina sevens star

Paul Gustard, the Harlequins head of rugby, is considering offering Argentina international Bautista Ezcurra a contract at the Gallagher Premiership club as he looks to strengthen his side's resources at centre.

Quins have already handed recente Luke Northmore a contract extension after the 22-year-old has impressed having stepped into the first team this season to provide injury cover in the centres and with Joe Marchant currently on loan to Super Rugby side the Blues.

Ezcurra, 24, has spent two weeks on trial with the West London club looking to earn a spot.

The former Sevens star can play at both centre and on the wing in the 15-a-side game and has trained with Argentina's Super Rugby side the Jaguares but struggled to break into the side.

As a sevens player he went to the 2016 Olympics in Rio.

Gloucester star returns to South Africa immediately

Eleven cap Springboks international Jaco Kriel has left Gloucester Rugby midseason  to join his former side, the Lions, with immediate effect.

The 30-year-old flanker has returned to Super Rugby after a difficult couple of years at the Gallagher Premiership side. Despite coming to England with a growing reputation Kriel has made just 20 appearances for Gloucester since arriving in 2018 having arrived at the club with a shoulder injury.

Super Rugby side the Lions announced the signing through their Twitter account with a message from Kriel himself, informing fans that he was ‘home’ and had signed a three-year deal.

He said: “I’m on my way to my new job this morning. I am proud to announce that I have re-joined the Lions on a three year deal.”
