Rugby player in hospital after serious injury which saw Welsh match abandoned 15 minutes in

A Welsh rugby club has cancelled its matches this weekend after a serious injury to one of their players.

Clwb Rygbi Cymry Caerdydd will not be playing their senior men’s games.

The injury occurred during the WRU Division 3 Cup game against Usk, with the match abandoned after just 15 minutes. The player in question is now being cared for at the University Hospital of Wales.

Now the club have made an announcement on their social media channels, saying that their scheduled games are off and thanking those who helped out as the episode unfolded.

The statement runs: “Following a serious injury during our first-team game last Saturday, Clwb will not be returning to the field of play this weekend.

“One of our players was injured and is now receiving the best possible care at UHW Cardiff.

“This is a chance to say thanks to all involved. Our superb medical team, Usk RFC (physio and player), the paramedics, all the players from both games from CRCC, Usk RFC and Rumney RFC, the referees from both games and our park attendant from Cardiff Council. Everybody contributed on a difficult afternoon.

“There is positive news from the hospital, but it is early days.

“A thanks also goes to the WRU and the Welsh Rugby Charitable Trust for their support this week.

“Our thoughts are with the family and our Clwb player.

“Some things are more important than rugby.”

A Welsh Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We were called at approximately 2.46pm last Saturday 15 October to a medical emergency on Fields Park Road in Cardiff. We sent a paramedic in a rapid response car and two emergency ambulances to the scene, where colleagues were also supported by the Emergency Medical Retrieval and Transfer Service Cymru. One person was taken to the University Hospital of Wales.”

Clwb's senior side were due to face Llanharan in an Admiral National League Division 3 East encounter at The Dairy Field.

The only teams from the club playing in the coming days will be junior sides and potentially the ladies.
