Rugby player gets full drag makeover to help his autistic son

A Caerphilly rugby player is having a seriously glamorous makeover on tonight's episode of Drag SOS - the Channel 4 show which sees drag queens travel up and down the UK boosting confidence as well as heel height.

Matthew Wood, who is a 36-year-old father-of-three boys, Evan, Kellan and Joshua, steps up to the glitter and puts himself out of his comfort zone in an effort to understand how son Kellan feels.

Kellan is autistic and Matthew hopes that by donning the drag get-up - as well as participating in a musical performance at the end of the show - his son will understand that being yourself is the best way to live your life.

The episode sees Matthew try out walking in heels and practising his dance routine wherever possible.

Matthew says on the show: "I'm very proud of where I am from, but a toughness is almost expected.

"I want to get up on stage to show a positive message, be comfortable in your own skin, be who you want to be."

The drag queens - as a collective known as Family Gorgeous -  took over Bedwas Workingmen's Hall making it the girls' Drag Lab, in which they transform their 'draglets' into stunning performers.

Speaking about being a positive role model for his children, Matthew adds: "People choose to be ignorant I remember once someone said he was broken. He says 'mam, dad, is there something wrong with me, why am I different? That was heartbreaking.

"The fear of not going with the herd, if I can show them you can still swim with the masses but sometimes swim in your own directions, find your own way.

Also appearing on the Caerphilly episode are Sian and Georgia. Charity-shop worker Sian wants to regain her former confidence and self-esteem after an abusive relationship, while Georgia - who has recently come out - would like to be more outgoing.
