Rugby fans pack bars and pubs as Wales' Six Nations campaign gets under way

The Six Nations returned this weekend, much to the excitement of rugby fans and pubs in Cardiff.

The city came to life as Wales drew 16-16 with Ireland at the Aviva Stadium on Sunday, in what was the final match of the weekend.

Red and green jerseys lined the streets and bars as two of the competition’s heavyweights faced off.

Fans endured an agonising 80 minutes which saw the teams share the honours.

Harry Burman, 20, a staff supervisor at Bierkeller on Wood Street, said the Six Nations’ opening weekend had been a massive boost to the bar.

“Our sports bar is completely rammed. It’s a massive bar, but it’s hardly been big enough today," he said.

“There’s been an amazing atmosphere this weekend. The Welsh are always patriotic and there’s a great buzz around the game against Ireland.

“It wasn’t quite as busy on Saturday, but the games that day still brought a lot of business."

Mike Jones, 27, assistant manager of Kiwi’s on St Mary Street, said that the opening weekend had lived up to his expectations.

“It’s especially busy when Wales are playing home games," he said. "We’re so close to the Principality Stadium, and you get such a good atmosphere on those matchdays.

“Today has been busy even though Wales are playing away and it’s a Sunday.

“The vibe with the Welsh fans has been pretty positive and optimistic, but we’ve had a few Irish fans in as well. It’s been a nice mix."
