Rugby evening headlines as water carrier charged after sparking brawl and Wales star left 'downhearted'

Here are the latest rugby headlines for the evening of Tuesday, October 19.

Injury updates on Navidi and Jenkins

Wales and Cardiff Rugby back-rower Josh Navidi is facing up to five months on the sidelines after dislocating his shoulders against the Bulls last week.

Cardiff's director of rugby Dai Young said of the Lions forward: "He has had surgery. Everything went well on the op.

"You are probably looking at four and a half to five months. We will know a little bit more when he gets to 8-12 weeks.

"He is a quick healer, but we won’t be rushing him back. He will be back when he’s ready.

"He is downhearted. It is the worst thing in the world to be injured. It’s not a great place to be and he has had nothing but bad luck.

"But he is a really strong guy mentally, as well as physically. He has done it before and I am sure he will come back just as good after this one as well."

As for Wales squad flanker Ellis Jenkins, who suffered a popped rib cartilage playing for Cardiff against the Sharks last Saturday, Young is optimistic he hasn't suffered serious damage.

"He is in Welsh camp," Young added. "We haven’t heard anything negative as in it's worse than they thought or that it’s a major concern.

"With that kind of injury, you are usually looking at seven to 10 days for it to settle down. I expect him to be sore for this week.

"If it goes into next week, well then he could be struggling a little bit. But he is a tough boy."

Cheslin Kolbe joins Faf de Klerk in being ruled out of autumn Tests

World Cup winners Cheslin Kolbe and Faf de Klerk have both been ruled out of South Africa's Autumn Nations Series Tests against Wales, Scotland and England.

Neither player has made a 32-man squad announced by SA Rugby, with Sale Sharks scrum-half De Klerk sidelined by a hip injury and star wing Kolbe absent because of a knee problem.

No timescale has so far been put on De Klerk's recovery, although some reports have claimed he could be out for up to five months.

Current world player of the year Pieter-Steph du Toit was also not considered as he continues his recovery from a shoulder injury.

"It's always unfortunate to lose players due to injury, but we have good depth in our squad and these are established players who have proven themselves at the highest level," Springboks head coach Jacques Nienaber told www.sarugby.za.

South Africa face Wales in Cardiff on November 6, then tackle Scotland seven days later, followed by England at Twickenham on November 20.

Frans Malherbe (neck) and RG Snyman (knee) are also out, with uncapped pair - lock Salmaan Moerat and scrum-half Grant Williams - among those included.

And there are four selected players based with Gallagher Premiership clubs in Leicester back-row forwards Jasper Wiese and Marco van Staden, Saracens prop Vincent Koch and Sale lock Lood de Jager.

Wasps coaching duo charged after sparking brawl

Two members of Wasps' coaching staff have been charged by the Rugby Football Union following a Gallagher Premiership clash against Exeter.

Backs transition coach Scott Barrow and head of performance Pete Atkinson were both ordered from the field of play by referee Wayne Barnes.

Barrow and Atkinson have now been charged with "conduct prejudicial to the interests of the union and the game," the RFU said, and they will appear before an independent disciplinary panel on Tuesday night.

The RFU said that Barrow had been charged for interfering with play by back-heeling the ball away from the pitch and blocking an Exeter player from retrieving the ball in the second half of the match at Coventry Building Society Arena last Saturday, which sparked a brawl among players.

Atkinson must answer for comments made towards Barnes following an Exeter first-half try. Chiefs won the game 27-23.

The disciplinary panel will be chaired by Mike Hamlin, with Gareth Graham and Mitch Read.

Cowan-Dickie and Watson ruled out of England's autumn Tests

England were coming to terms with a day of grim injury updates after Luke Cowan-Dickie and Anthony Watson were ruled out of the entire Autumn Nations Series.

Cowan-Dickie has fallen to the ankle problem sustained in Exeter's victory at Wasps on Saturday and has been replaced in Eddie Jones' 34-man squad for the Tests against Tonga, Australia and South Africa by Jamie George.

And, in another seismic blow to England, the PA news agency understands that Watson will also miss the autumn, and potentially the Six Nations as well if the knee damage sustained late in Bath's home rout by Saracens is confirmed as a ruptured ACL.

The only ray of light in an otherwise bleak afternoon was that Maro Itoje's shoulder injury, which also incurred at the Recreation Ground on Sunday, is not serious and he should be available to face Tonga at Twickenham on November 6.
