Rugby: East Kilbride v Kilmarnock clash to be called off with 10 players in Covid isolation

East Kilbride Rugby Club are set to see their first game of the new year postponed with more than 10 players in Covid isolation ahead of Saturday’s scheduled home match with Kilmarnock.

The Torrance House side have been out of action since a 39-18 defeat at Garnock on December 11 when West Region League One entered it’s festive break.

And it looks like Allan Steel’s squad will have to wait a little longer to return to action, with all training cancelled this week.

Club captain Mark Ellison said: “Saturday’s game is not looking very likely.

“We’ve got double figures in isolation right now from over the Christmas period, so there won’t be any training this week and it doesn’t look good for this weekend, but we’ve still to sort it with the league.

“Fortunately, I’m not one of the players affected.

“A lot of other teams this season have had four or five postponements through Covid and this is only our second one after one way back at the very start of the season because one player tested positive on the Friday night.

“But this is the first time we’ve been badly hit.

“It’s been stop-start over the last year for clubs so it’s a little bit frustrating.”

East Kilbride sit fourth in the table and trail runaway leaders Allan Glens by 18 points, having played a game more.

Their next match is likely to be a trip to Stewartry on January 15.

And Ellison added: “We are away to Stewartry the following week so we start to look at that, which will be a tough game.

“It’s always a tough place to go.

“We are not really in the promotion hunt this season. There’s a lot of young players in the squad, but Stewartry will be going for it so they will be wanting a strong performance and a big win to keep their hopes alive.

“We need to do our best to overcome that.

“The top four is a reasonable target for us. We lost to Garnock just before Christmas in quite a tight game, so getting in that top four would be the aim for this year.”
