Rudy Giuliani’s wild election side show was once again taken to new heights during a hearing in Michigan on Wednesday that devolved into a bizarre and uncontrollable spectacle, as witnesses shouted at Republican lawmakers while failing to provide credible evidence of mass voter fraud.
Even President Donald Trump’s personal attorney appeared taken aback when Melissa Carone, one of the witnesses from the campaign’s legal team, began lambasting GOP members of the House Oversight Committee.
Ms Carone, an IT contractor who worked for Dominion Voting Systems in Detroit on Election Day and has since filed unsubstantiated claims of voter fraud in Michigan, claimed to have seen “thousands” of examples of alleged voter fraud. However, her story has already been discredited by a Michigan judge who said an affidavit she filed was “simply not credible” last month.
But she was still invited to speak alongside the Trump legal team on Wednesday at the hearing, where she attacked Rep. Steve Johnson (R—MI) as he attempted to ask a straightforward question about her specific allegations of voter fraud.
“I know what I saw. I know what I saw,” Ms Carone said repeatedly. “And I signed something saying that if I’m wrong I can go to prison. Did you?”
Mr Johnson responded that he was simply trying to “ask a legitimate question” as the chair warned Ms Carone not to interrupt the lawmakers at the hearing.
At one point, Ms Carone was shouting over the representatives to the point where a seemingly jostled Mr Giuliani leaned in and attempted to shush her.
"I have an affidavit!" The witness shouted later on in the hearing when lawmakers said she should have been under oath, adding: “I am a mother, I have two children, I have two degrees. I don’t know any woman in the world that would write an affidavit under oath just to write it. You can go to prison for this!”
Ms Carone wasn’t the only controversial witness to appear before the House Oversight Committee on Wednesday — another unidentified woman drew backlash when she suggested voter fraud could have taken place because “all Chinese look alike” in a statement.
“The other representative said that you can actually show up and vote without an ID, it's shocking. How can you allow that to happen?” she said. “A lot of people think all Indians look alike, I think all Chinese look alike, so how would you tell?”
Press conferences and hearings featuring the president’s legal team have spiraled out of control in recent weeks as his campaign faces repeated setbacks in the nation’s courts, with continued failures to present credible evidence of voter fraud leading to rejected and dismissed lawsuits.
Mr Trump’s false claims of mass voter fraud — which began before votes could even be counted — have been shot down by his own Justice Department and Department of Homeland Security, which described the 2020 election as “the most secure” in US history.
