Donald Trump’s personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani was undergoing hospital treatment on Monday after testing positive for coronavirus.

The former New York mayor was admitted to Georgetown University Medical Center in Washington on Sunday.

Posting on Twitter, the 76-year-old said he was “recovering quickly”.

“Thank you to all my friends and followers for all the prayers and kind wishes,” he wrote.

“I’m getting great care and feeling good. Recovering quickly and keeping up with everything.”

His diagnosis was earlier announced by the president, who wished him a speedy recovery.

“@RudyGiuliani, by far the greatest mayor in the history of NYC, and who has been working tirelessly exposing the most corrupt election (by far!) in the history of the USA, has tested positive for the China Virus. Get better soon Rudy, we will carry on!!!” Mr Trump tweeted.

Mr Giuliani has in recent days travelled extensively to battleground states, including Georgia and Michigan, in an effect to help Mr Trump’s bid to overturn the result of last month’s election. Several times he met officials for hours without wearing a mask.

Last week he was photographed maskless standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Republican lawmakers in Phoenix, Arizona. After his diagnosis was revealed, the Arizona legislature announced it would close for a week out of an abundance of caution “for recent cases and concerns relating to Covid-19”.

The Trump campaign said in a statement that Mr Giuliani tested negative twice before his visits to Arizona, Michigan and Georgia. Unidentified Trump team members who had close contact with Mr Giuliani were said to be in self-isolation.

Mr Trump himself fell ill with the virus in early October. Since then, several people in Mr Trump’s circle orbit have also become infected, including White House chief of staff Mark Meadows and Ben Carson, the secretary of housing and urban development. The president’s wife, Melania Trump, and teenage son, Barron Trump, also tested positive.
