The president's personal lawyer thinks his client is as truthful as he can be in a world where people are challenged for saying things that are false.
Rudy Giuliani appeared on "Meet the Press" Sunday, where host Chuck Todd pressed him on whether or not President Trump is a "truthful" person.
"I _ I believe he's truthful, yeah, as much as he can be in a world in which every single word you say is picked apart," the former New York City mayor said. "If you say four and its actually five they say you're lying."
A moment earlier Todd asked Giuliani if Trump was "the most truthful client" he'd ever represented as a lawyer. Giuliani struggled to answer that question head-on.
"I represent probably the most important client I've ever had with regard to the future of the United States, yes," he said. "Because he's been a great president."
The president's lawyer also made headlines on "Meet the Press" in August when he clumsily tried explaining to Todd "Truth isn't always truth" in a discussion about differing accounts and perceptions among political insiders.
By the beginning of this month, the president had made 9,451 false statements, according to the Washington Post. A Quinnipiac University poll last month found that 30 percent of Americans found President Trump to be honest.
Former Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, who called Trump a "phony" and a "fraud" in 2016, said he was "sickened" by the Trump administration's alleged dishonest during special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into election meddling and obstruction.
"I am sickened at the extent and pervasiveness of dishonesty and misdirection by individuals in the highest office in the land, including the President," the Utah congressman tweeted last week.
The president shot back by mocking Romney for losing the 2012 election to Barack Obama.
