Ruby Murray son threatens legal action over trademarked curry name

The son of Belfast singer Ruby Murray has threatened legal action after her name was trademarked to sell curry.

The 1950s singer’s name started to be used as cockney rhyming slang in the 60s, with most people now familiar with “going for a Ruby Murray”.

But earlier this month, London businessman Tariq Aziz got an “exclusive rights” trademark allowing him to use her name for all things related to curry .

Ruby’s son Tim Murray, 54, says the Intellectual Property Office should have sought the family’s permission.

The voice coach, from Devon, revealed that his mum, who died in 1996, was touched by the alternative use of her name.

But he said: “If anyone should profit from her name, it should be her family first, then her loyal fans.”

Enam Ali, founder of the British Curry Awards, wants a rethink, reports the Mirror .

He said: “The words ‘Ruby Murray’ are part of our heritage and are used by many curry establishments.”

Mr Aziz was unavailable for comment.

A IPO spokesman said there was no clash between the applicant’s business and what Ruby Murray the artist was known for.
