Rubio makes new Cuba demand after power grid failure and Trump takeover threats

  • Secretary of State Marco Rubio has declared that Cuba “needs new people in charge” to repair its struggling economy a day after President Donald Trump said he’ll have the “honor” of taking Cuba.
  • Trump was asked about the struggling nation Tuesday during a meeting with the prime minister of Ireland but deferred to Rubio.
  • Rubio said the island “has an economy that doesn’t work in a political and governmental system. They can’t fix it.” He continued, “So they have to change dramatically. What they announced yesterday is not dramatic enough. It’s not going to fix it.”
  • Cuba was hit with a third major blackout Monday in four months, underscoring the island's deepening energy and economic crises, alongside rising political tensions with the US.
  • The Cuban government attributes its energy difficulties to a US energy blockade, following warnings from Trump regarding tariffs on any country supplying oil to the island.
