Ruben Loftus-Cheek's first words following surgery on ruptured Achilles tendon

Ruben Loftus-Cheek has posted a message to Chelsea supporters following the injury he picked up in the friendly win over New England Revolution.

Starting on the bench in the game in the United States, the midfielder limped off after 68 minutes after going to ground clutching his left ankle.

The 23-year-old was seen leaving Gillette Stadium on crutches and Chelsea revealed on Thursday that the player had ruptured his Achilles tendon in the 3-0 victory.

The news comes as a hammer blow to Maurizio Sarri after the England international had nailed down a place in his starting XI ahead of the Europa League final against Arsenal at the end of the month.

Loftus-Cheek underwent surgery on the injury on Thursday evening but it's not clear at present how long he will be out of action for.

Taking to Twitter for the first time since his injury, the highly-rated player sent a message to Chelsea and England fans having been ruled out of the upcoming Europa League final and UEFA Nations League finals.

"Hi guys, difficult to describe how I'm feeling right now. More confusion than sadness," said the midfielder.

"My surgery went very well yesterday evening so I'm off to a good start!

"I'll be watching and supporting from the sidelines for a little while so I wish the boys all the luck in the Europa League final and of the course the Nations League finals.

"Coming back strong from an injury is something I've had to do all my life and I'll do it again.

"See you on the pitch as soon as possible."
