Rubbish left by University of Bristol students on Clifton Downs leaves visitor 'appalled'

A visitor to Clifton Downs has said they were "appalled" by the amount of rubbish left there by students attending a University of Bristol fair.

The Bristol Students' Union welcome fair was attended by 16,000 students from September 24-25, and images sent to Bristol Live show dozens of bin bags filled with refuse from the event.

The visitor said: "I was appalled to see the amount of rubbish headed for landfill after the recent student fair. The students were also given free Dominos pizzas bags which are now abandoned on the Downs.

"I will be writing to Martin Wiles, head of sustainability at Bristol uni. (They) need to totally rethink this event."

A spokesperson for Bristol SU said the rubbish would not be dumped in a landfill.

The fair offered new and returning students the chance to network, and there were also food and drink vendors available.

Water refill stations were available on the Downs and people were encouraged to bring reusable bottles.

A Bristol SU Spokesperson said: "This year we took extra steps with the Bristol SU Welcome Fair to make sure it was a more sustainable event and produced less waste than previous years.

"This year we launched a companion web app to support student groups to go ‘flyerless’ and reduce their paper waste. We also contracted MJ Church to recycle from the site.

"General and comingled waste has been collected and then will be separated and recycled. Bins were regularly emptied on the site throughout the event, as well as litter picking taking place.

"Concessions and contractors were also not permitted to use single use plastics.

"We welcomed approximately 16,000 students to our Welcome Fair across two days and are already looking into what we can do to make the event more sustainable next year.”
