Rubbish dumped at Forthriver bridge set on fire as amenity sites closed

Rubbish dumped at a bridge in the wake of Council amenity sites closing has been set alight.

Material, believed to include empty cooking oil drums, went up in flames on Tuesday night at a site in North Belfast.

The incident occurred at an old bridge between Glenside Park off the Crumlin Road and Forthriver Drive which is not an officially ‘adopted’ road.

One source, who lives in the area, said the issue of dumping at what is known locally as Harmony Bridge is an ongoing problem. General anti-social behaviour is also an issue, it is understood.

The resident added: “There’s always been an issue with dumping here, with all sorts like vans being driven down there and stuff dumped at the side of the road. But it’s got a lot worse since the Council dumps closed.

"There was a sofa left there the other day and next to the bridge there’s those big oil drums used by takeaways left there.

“But on Tuesday night a load of it was set on fire. The police came and they had to call the Fire Brigade. It’s a disgrace that this is just a constant problem and nothing is ever done about it.”

Belfast Live has reported previously that as the road is not adopted by any Stormont agency it appears that no one can or will take responsibility for it.

The NIFRS confirmed they attended a fire in the Forthriver area at 8.30pm.

One fire appliance was sent from Westland Fire Station which involved a “large quantity of rubbish”.

They added: “Firefighters used two jets to extinguish the fire. The incident was dealt with by 8.58pm and the cause of the fire is believed to be deliberate ignition.”
