Rubbish collections could be disrupted after three lorries destroyed in blaze

Refuse collections could be disrupted tomorrow (Wednesday) in Weston after three lorries were destroyed in blaze.

Crews were called to Winterstoke Road at around 3:48pm today (September 8).

It took 25 firefighters almost two hours to extinguish the blaze.

A spokesperson for North Somerset Recycling and Waste said the authority was 'working on plans to minimise disruption'.

"Around 16.00 this afternoon, three waste collection vehicles caught fire at the WsM Winterstoke depot," a spokesperson said. "The fire brigade were in attendance and have put all fires out.

"No one was hurt.

"The vehicles are all severely damaged and will not return to service.

"We are working on plans to minimise any disruption for collections tomorrow."

Three crews from Weston, two from Avonmouth and two from Southmead attended the incident.

A spokesperson for Avon Fire and Rescue Service said: "The fire was extinguished at 5:49pm.

"In total, nine breathing apparatus were used, two 45ml jets, one high-pressure hose reel and 25 litres of foam.

"The cause of the fire is believed to be accidental."
