He is best known for playing Father MacAnally in the hit BBC series which ran from 1996 until 2001, starring opposite Stephen Tompkinson and Dervla Kirwan.

In 2003, he scored another Hollywood role by playing Judge Ballaugh in Cate Blanchett's thriller Veronica Guerin.

He continued working up until last year, with his final project being a short film called Remains.

Toibin was handed a number of honours for his acting work over the years, picking up a lifetime achievement award from the Irish Film and Television Academy 2011 and being awarded the freedom of Cork in 2015.
