RTE viewers upset after watching dog's funeral and goats sent to slaughter on One Day: Keeping Ireland Company

TV viewers were left feeling emotional after watching a tear-jerking documentary on RTE last night.

Viewers were especially touched by heartbreaking scenes saw a beloved family dog being cremated and buried and four goats being sent to slaughter.

One Day: Keeping Ireland Company explored Irish people's relationships with pets and animals.

The programme revealed that there are 260,000 people working with Ireland’s 26 million animals every day, from farmers and vets to charity workers.

Ireland is home to a whopping one million cats and dogs, making up most of the 1.3 million pets in Ireland.

Dogs are the most popular pets overall but rabbits, gerbils and guinea pigs are also favoured by Irish people.

And a staggering €600,000 is spent on pet food every day in Ireland.

On the farming side of things, almost a quarter of a million people work with animals on Irish farms, including goat farmer Ami Madden.

During the documentary, Ami took four of her goats to be killed for their meat but viewers found the scenes hard to watch.

One viewer wrote on Twitter: "Watching #oneday on #rte1 and my god! In floods over the four beautiful goats!"

Another added: "Watching #oneday with Mam and we're in bits over the goats, stocking up on Quorn in the morning!"

But a third believed the slaughter scenes were "very important" to show so people knew where "meat came from".

Meanwhile, another poignant scene showed a much-loved dog's funeral which left viewers tearful again.

One wrote: "Dog funerals on RTE 1. Lads I can’t cope, I can’t focking cope. Poor Tammy."

Another queried the cost of the funeral, asking why someone would spend so much on a ten-year-old dog.
