RTE viewers stunned by incident that left star 'hiding for 30 minutes in gallery'

The second episode of Back to Barrytown aired on RTE 1 on Sunday night and viewers were again full of praise for the show and "national treasure" Colm Meaney.

In this episode, Colm Meaney travelled to Kilbarrack, where the film The Snapper was made as well as the iconic house that Meaney lived in.

Meaney spoke to many cast and crew members, including Tina Kellegher, creator Roddy Doyle, and the film's director, Stephen Frears.

They visited the pub that was a firm favourite of the Curley Clan as well as talking to the locals about how the movie portrayed their lives as Dubliners.

Viewers again flocked to Twitter to praise the show as well as reminisce about how Dublin has changed since then. Meaney was praised for his interviewing.

Jessica tweeted: "Colm Meaney is a national treasure and must be protected at all costs #BacktoBarrytown." We certainly agree with that sentiment.

Roisin tweeted: "Loving watching #Backtobarrytown and love living in Barrytown - just looking for my house in all the panoramic shots."

Unfortunately, one of the stars of The Snapper, Pat Laffan, who played Mr Burgess, passed away in 2019.

In the episode, Colm told a story of just how much their lives changed after the release of the Snapper in 1989.

"After the film came out, it was very hard for the two of us to go out in Dublin together."

"We had one experience in Capel Street, where this tribe of kids just came out of nowhere and surrounded us, screaming and roaring, and started moving along with us."

"It was so bad we had to hide in a gallery for half an hour until we got the all-clear.

"We must have got ten yards down the road and all the kids appeared again, shouting, ‘Georgie Burgess’."

The final episode of Back to Barrytown will air this Sunday focusing on the third film in the Barrytown trilogy, The Van.
