RTE viewers split after dramatic Home of the Year finale with many picking one other house to win

Jennifer did a complete renovation, knocked all internal walls, dug up the floor and lowered it plus added on an extra floor to make it a two-storey house.

There were clever storage solutions throughout this home. with Jennifer describing her style as modern, playful and colourful.

She said that it is fun, comfortable and loves to see people’s reactions when they see a feature such as her disco ball light in her brightly coloured downstairs toilet.

And that was one of the factors which led to judges Hugh Wallace, Suzie Mc Adam and Amanda Bone to name it the overall Home of the Year for 2021.

However, the decision proved controversial on social media - with many championing the black house which belonged to David O'Brien of Cork.

Jennifer Sheahan is very proud of the design of her late 1800s cottage in Dublin (RTE)

One viewer tweeted: "Well that was a travesty #Homeoftheyear lovely house and everything but two other homes were nicer."

Another said: "Quite frankly surprised at the #Homeoftheyear winner. Lovely house but I thought the black house was better. Ah well."

A third added: "The artisan cottage is beautiful but nothing you couldn’t find on an Instagram moodboard. The black house in Cork is my winner #homeoftheyear."

But there were many who agreed with the decision - including one person who said they had been in the cottage before Jennifer got her hands on it!

Another fan laughed: "Late to #Homeoftheyear but beyond delighted with the winner!!! My fav gaff by a country mile. Also I would like a 6 part Netflix series on how it was decided because I thought the judges were gonna kill each other at one point."

While the finale was neatly summed up by one watcher.

"Such a worthy winner of #Homeoftheyear this year! It’s amazing to see what people do architecturally but when someone takes an environment and makes such a warm space, incredibly clever use of design, and thoughtful interiors it’s inspiring as most of us live in those houses."
