RTE viewers react as Mary Lou McDonald, Leo Varadkar, Micheal Martin and more debate united Ireland on Claire Byrne Live

It's been a century since the country was partitioned and the fallout from Brexit has reignited debate about a united Ireland.

A recent poll taken by RTE's Claire Byrne Live found 53% of people would vote in favour of a united Ireland, 19% would not and 28% were undecided.

The show hosted a special debate on the issue this evening.

Joining Claire in the studios were the leaders of the three main parties - Sinn Fein's Mary Lou McDonald, Fianna Fail's Micheal Martin and Fine Gael's Leo Varadkar.

Former rugby player Andrew Trimble, former GAA star Joe Brolly and politicians Ian Paisley Jr, Naomi Long and former Taoiseach John Bruton also had their say on the divisive issue.

Viewers also flocked to social media to air their views on the controversial topic.

We started off with the standard problems with the RTE Player.

There was talk of replacing the National Anthem but there was one option some people didn't want.

Mary Lou McDonald and Leo Varadkar were up first and somewhat surprisingly both seemed to agree on the topic.

Although some didn't like that they agreed with the Tanaiste.

Some were also impressed by Mary Lou.

Overall the respectful nature of the debate between the Fine Gael and Sinn Fein leaders went down well.

DUP MP Gregory McDonald was very much opposed to the idea and viewers weren't impressed.

Resulting in something many of us never thought we'd see!

Rugby star Andrew Trimble was up next and viewers were impressed by his levelheaded contribution.

Even if they got his name wrong!

People were generally impressed by the show.

Things got a bit heated when Joe Brolly made his appearance.

There was someone missing though.

John Bruton's contribution did not seem to go down well.

Although some agreed with the former Taoiseach.

Micheal Martin was last up and many quickly pointed out one thing.

And his contribution drew a very mixed reaction.
