RTE viewers left in tears after two heartbreaking stories on last night's First Dates Ireland

Once again, First Dates Ireland brought some viewers to tears after an emotional match between two elderly daters last night.

On one side we had Marie.

Marie, whose husband died of lung cancer, said she felt lonely for so long that she stopped talking about it.

''You can’t keep telling people how lonely you are,” she said, heartbreakingly.

Denis, meanwhile, was with his wife for 56 years and felt her loss keenly.

“The bit of loneliness is always there,” he said.

He went through the heartbreaking situation of caring for his wife, who had Alzheimer’s.

All the while, he was undergoing treatment for colon cancer.

“She didn’t know what I was going through but, thank God, I got through it.”

''Ah Denis. You dote of a man.'' one viewer tweeted.

While another said that Denis was a real charmer:

''I work in the place where Denis lives, and let me tell ya he cruises around the place like he’s an old gangster in a Scorsese film, the man is the most dapper person I’ve ever met.''

In the end, Denis was interested in seeing her again.

However, Marie thought he needed more time to process his grief, which he agreed with.

“If I may say so, with the greatest of respect, I feel Denis has a little while to go yet to be on his own. I think he probably still is grieving. There is grief still there,” she said.

“I think Marie is spot on,” Denis replied.

“Perhaps it’s not long enough yet. She’s the first person to say that to me and she’s on the ball.”

Which means that sadly, there was no second date for the duo.

Leaving people watching absolutely heartbroken.

''I think I am more disappointed by Denis and Marie not hooking up on FirstDates than the #lockdown not being lifted - GUTTED!'' said one user.
