RTE viewers left in tears after baby's tragic death on The Rotunda

Thursday's episode of The Rotunda was a tear-jerker as viewers saw a couple lose one of their twin babies.

Ciara Caffrey and Mickey Brennan were devastated when they went for their 16 week scan and found out their baby Evie had anencephaly, a serious birth defect where babies are born without parts of the brain and skull.

"I couldn't think, I was only focus on the news I was given," said Ciara.

"People were saying 'You're going to have to stay healthy, you still have a healthy baby in there'.

"But it just took over."

Little Evie lived for an hour and six minutes after her birth - long enough to meet her mother after she woke up after her emergency C-section.

It was a difficult scene to watch and heartbroken viewers took to Twitter to share their feelings.

"Watching #TheRotunda tonight was tough viewing," wrote one. "Prayers and thoughts to all the families shown tonight. And the super staff especially Bereavement Midwife ...There are no words!"

"I’m an absolute mess watching this," said another.

A third added: "Never been so emotional watching #therotunda before. Lots of warrior moms tonight."

"Ah Jesus, Evie and Lucy. People go through so much," wrote a fourth.
