RTE Toy Show star Saoirse Ruane's mum shares update on daughter after 'fight of her life' operation

Saoirse Ruane's mother said the Toy Show star is ‘comfortable and recovering’ after undergoing life changing surgery on Tuesday.

The 10-year-old from Galway, who stole the hearts of the nation on the Late Late Show Toy Show in 2020, is fighting cancer for a second time, and was admitted to Crumlin’s Children Hospital this week to have major surgery to try to remove a new tumour on her lung.

Taking to social media on Wednesday, her mother Roseanna issued an update on her daughter’s condition and told followers and well wishers the surgery went to plan.

“Good morning everyone.

“Just a quick update to let you all know that Saoírse’s surgery went as planned.

“She is comfortable and recovering in ICU with SLUSH by her side.”

After previously referring to it as the ‘fight of her life’, the mum-of-two added: “This is the first of many steps on this difficult journey!”

But glad to be on the other side of the operation, she went on to thank the doctors and nurses for their work to save her daughter’s life.

She said: “We are so happy and grateful to be sitting here beside her.

“We are so thankful to her surgeon and her amazing team here in Crumlin Hospital thank you for your continued support.”

Saoirse first won praise for her strength and bravery during her Toy Show appearance two years ago, when she told host Ryan Tubridy about having to have her leg amputated after being diagnosed with a rare tumour in 2019, and how she has learned to walk again on a new prosthetic.

Last week, her mother Roseanna shared the devastating news that her cancer has returned, and a rare tumour was found in her lung.

After meeting with her medical team, the heartbroken mother asked for prayers as she told fans and followers that life saving surgery would be needed to remove it.

Courageous Saoirse won praise nationwide after she made an appearance on RTE’s Late Late Show last Friday night, ahead of the surgery this week.

Speaking on the night, Tubridy said: “You changed many, many lives by being a very special, important person.”

Mum Roseanna added: “We are so grateful to Ryan @instatubridy & his amazing team (special mention to Kathryn, Danielle, Jane & Neasa) for their support, kindness & love shown to us & not forgetting Dee Forbes for her kind words."
