RTE Tommy Tiernan viewers are saying the same thing as 'much needed conversation' praised

Viewers of the Tommy Tiernan Show were blown away by sexual health educator from Dublin who appeared on tonight's episode.

The primetime show on RTE has been praised almost universally due to the nature of the Navan comedian.

Tiernan has no idea who is featuring until he sees them walk onto the set from behind the curtain.

This leaves him no time to do research - usually resulting in a simple conversation.

Since first coming onto our screens two years ago, there have been some utterly brilliant, heart touching moments, and tonight was no different.

Robbie Lawlor was a guest on the hit RTE One and the host and those watching at home were stunned at his attempt to bring up a much needed conversation.

The HIV activist told Tommy of his journey with the sexually transmitted infection, and he discussed how there still a stigma attached to people living with HIV, and how there is a lack of understanding of HIV and AIDS in Ireland.

Lawlor believes that education is key to prevention.

Robbie was diagnosed with HIV when he was just 21 years old, and very eloquently spoke to the presenter about his journey, as well as educating him and everyone at home about the virus.

"I know men and women and the first time they have sex, they get HIV," he said.

"It only takes one time to get HIV. I don't want to scare people, but that's just the reality. That's the reality for so many men and women across Ireland.

"We have this idea that people living with HIV are highly promiscuous, and who cares if they are? I know highly promiscuous people, and they're very good at using condoms.

"We have to kind of dismantle that kind of representation of HIV that we all have. I think it's to our own downfall.

"Like 'I knew all my previous partners, they didn't look sick, how the hell do I have HIV?' Because in my head, only the really promiscuous people got STIs, essentially. And that's not the case.

"There's a lot of unlearning that has to happen because HIV cases have never been higher in Ireland than they are today. We get around 500 new diagnoses every year. We're one of the highest in Europe [and the reason is] lack of education."

Viewers took to Twitter in their droves to heap praise on both the guest and the host.

One man wrote: "well done keep educating people I’m old enough to remember the 80s don’t let complacency set in."

Another demanded that gay men health services reopen after watching the interview.

He said: "As pointed out by Robbie Lawlor on the Tommy Tiernan Show, Ireland has higher rates of HIV than ever before Gay and Bi Men are at particular risk yet the ONLY specialised service for Gay Bi Men & Trans Community remains close #OpenGMHSnow."

A woman tweeted: "Robbie Lawlor never heard of you before Robbie until #tommytiernanshow - you are a fantastic human being.

"The work you are doing is so important and you are doing it in the great sense of humour you seem to have. Great interview."

Another said: "Never thought I’d enjoy a conversation about HIV. This has been an absolute breath of fresh air, such an enlightening, educational & uplifting conversation.

"I love how Tommy asks the questions all of us have. So refreshing. Robbie Lawlor is inspirational."
