RTE Tommy Tiernan Show viewers in awe at two friends and their moving story about surrogacy

Tommy Tiernan returned to TV screens on Safurday for the very last episode of the series.

After weeks of entertaining viewers throughout lockdown with his riveting interviews Tommy delivered another brilliant show which had fans hooked.

The Navan comedian spoke with Oscar award winning director Neil Jordan in an intimate chat which had audiences raving.

And the funny man had people in stiches with his genuinely attentive interview with fashion designer Joanne Hynes

But it was his first guests Elaine Murphy and Laura Sutton who shared their fascinating story of surrogacy.

Laura, a long term friend of Elaine, decided to carry her baby after Elaine experienced multiple heartbreaking miscarriages.

Laura was a gestational surrogate for Elaine and her husband Brian, who welcomed their baby Iris via surrogacy last year.

Speaking on the show Elaine said: "There is no legislation around it, I am not officially the mother of my baby as we sit here today. I'm not on the birth cert, and as it looks I won't be on the birth cert.

"My husband is the father of the baby, so he's on the birth cert, he can become the guardian of the baby. But, because Laura is married to another man, Brian, who is my husband, has to be given the right by Laura's husband."

Viewers were stunned by the moving surrogacy story (RTE)

Elaine added that after twenty years of IVF treatment and multiple ectopic pregnancies, she had given up hope when her close friend Laura stepped in to offer to carry her baby for no fee.

She continued: "My story started twenty years ago when I had an ectopic pregnancy, which is where its in the tube, I went on to have two more of those."

Laura who approached Elaine after witnessing her struggle first hand, said that the decision to carry Elaine's baby was an easy one, even though there were difficult moments.

Elaine said that she didn't hold Irish after the birth, and unfortunately didn't see her until 4 and a half months after the birth.

She said: "I said 'you need to be there, as soon as she enters this world she is your baby' that was the big thing for me to see Elaine and Brian holding their new baby, gooey and brand new, that for me is my job done. There was no holding."

Laura continued: "It wouldn't be for everybody(being a surrogate), not everybody can do it. I knew all along, all through my pregnancy, that I was just growing her, I was minding her. My children knew it wasn't our baby.

"It was a big thing for me, and if anybody was considering doing it and thought 'oh I'm not sure if I could' then it's not for you."

Naturally viewers were quick to heap praise on their pair for sharing their story.

One social media user wrote: "What a beautiful story Glad for Elaine & her husband, but by god what a truly amazing person Laura was to carry the baby They're the type of friends we ALL need in our lives

Another added: "Laura is incredible. Glad she eventually got a chance to talk in the end. What a thing to do for a friend.

A third said: "Amazing surrogacy journey on #tommytiernanshow a beautiful friendship the strength it takes to do what she did is so admirable."

And another said: "Can’t get my head around having a baby for someone who is in your life & the challenges that brings; having to literally ignore the fact that you gave birth to that child. Laura is incredibly strong & selfless."
