RTE to air Christy Dignam documentary in honour of late Aslan singer tonight

A documentary about the life of late Aslan frontman Christy Dignam is set to be aired on RTE One tonight.

'This is Christy' first aired six years ago in 2017, and it charts the Dublin singer's life and upbringing and his career in music. Christy sadly passed away last week aged 63 following a hard-fought battle with cancer.

Last Saturday thousands of fans turned lined the streets in his native Finglas to give him an incredible sendoff, with many singing singing his popular song 'Crazy World' as tribute. Tributes also poured in for Christy from other famous faces in the music world, with U2 star Bono saying that Christy could 'out-sing' him in an emotional tribute.

"This is Christy" follows the rise of the Finglas native, from his early days as a performer, listening to his father sing while cooking the Sunday dinner. It also follows Christy and Aslan as the band prepare to play a sell-out gig at Dublin's Iveagh Gardens in 2017.

According to the official synopsis from RTE, 'This is Christy' gives viewers an intimate portrait of an artist who battled back from some of life's deepest traumas including sexual abuse, drug addiction and cancer. The synopsis reads: "This is Christy offers a revealing and evocative insight into the life and creative impulse of one of the leading singer/songwriters of his generation.

"For as long as he could remember, music had been huge in Christy's life – the chink where the light could get in. His love of music began in the Dignam family home in Finglas as the young Christy sat enthralled, listening to his father sing while cooking the Sunday dinner.

"The documentary captures Christy's personal story, with Christy speaking frankly and honestly about the obstacles he faced; the importance of his family, and where he got his love of music.

"Viewers see how Christy's illness impeded his daily life and how he balanced the management of his condition while still being the charismatic and beloved frontman of one of Ireland's most enduringly popular bands."

This is Christy is set to air tonight, Wednesday 21 June, on RTE One from 10:35pm.
