RTE star opens up on dark moments, therapy visits and 'great difficulties'

RTE star Ryan Tubridy has candidly opened up on his therapy experience as he highlighted the "one of the great, great difficulties" of his life.

The Late Late Show host has returned to his radio show after a two-week break where he visited Co Galway, west Cork and scaled Ireland's highest mountain.

However shortly before he took off for a well-deserved rest, Tubridy told Irish Times journalist Róisín Ingle about his therapy experience, and how he struggled to "get out of chatshow guest mode".

When asked if he had attended therapy, the broadcaster responded: "No, I haven’t. I tried a bit of therapy once. I sat down with somebody about three times. And it wasn’t for me. And I’ll tell you why. I couldn’t get out of the chatshow guest mode. So that was unfortunate. I thought I should try it because everyone talks about it… so, yeah, I have to work out my stuff myself.

“I think we’re all complex creatures, and I’m no more, no less complex than anyone else. People’s lives are a collection of joys and difficulties.”

And Tubs went on to describe his parents splitting up as "one of the great, great difficulties of my life", adding: "I don’t dwell on all of these things too much. Because I think that you have to get on with things. You have to be quite stoical. Otherwise you could get quite dark."

It comes as Tubridy made his big return to the airwaves on Monday after a short break following the end of the Late Late Show.

The RTE presenter said he is feeling 'well rested' after his two-week absence from Radio 1.

Tubs thanked comedian Oliver Callan for taking over from him and he praised him for doing a stellar job on air.

He said: "I am delighted to be back, I hope you are doing well.

"Thank you to Oliver Callan for holding the fort and to the team for minding him so well, he gets better treatment than I do but that's the way it goes."

He added that he really needed a break after a long season of the Late Late Show and he encouraged anyone who can take a break from work and life to do so.

He said: "I am well rested, I really needed a break and there are a lot of people listening today who feel the same way. If you are in a position to take a little time out, just take it."
